Today, I want to talk about how you can build a niche within the personal branding space.

It's important to be known for a niche if you want to build a solid personal brand. People known for one thing tend to create a legacy in the industry and attract multiple opportunities while being experts.

So, how can you identify your niche and build a legacy?

Step 1: Identify content topics you can write about, speak about, and share with little preparation. These topics can be related to your personal life, professional life, interests, hobbies or even a side hustle.

Step 2: Once you've identified a topic, create 4 to 5 content buckets similar to the topic.

Let me share an example:

My topic is marketing and my content buckets include personal branding in marketing, social media marketing, paid advertisements, media mix planning, and social media strategy. These are some buckets I can write about based on my years of experience in the field.

Similarly, create a bucket list of 4 to 5 sub-topics.

Step 3: To identify the top-performing niche, create content on your preferred channel for all the 4-5 sub-topics. Use a similar format in the initial month, like text post, carousel post, video, reel or short-form tweet. Create a minimum of 10 posts for each topic.

Step 4: Identify your post frequency once you've created the content. You can post twice a week or 5-times a week. It should be as you feel comfortable. Don't take an ambitious goal in the first week or month. Keep it at 2-3 posts a week. Start posting content on your preferred channel. Focus on only one channel in the initial phase.

Step 5: Start analysing your content performance after two weeks. Identify which content bucket is performing better than others in the first month. Repeat this process for three months to know what your audience wants to read or hear from you.

The post-performance should be evaluated as follows:

  • LinkedIn: The engagement rate should be more than 2.50%

  • Twitter (X): The engagement rate should be more than 7%

  • Instagram (reel): watch time should be more than 5 hours

  • Instagram (post): The engagement rate should be more than 5%

  • Threads: The engagement rate should be 7%

  • Medium: Read ratio to be more than 50%

Take time to understand what you like and what you don't. You shouldn't let other people influence your choice of topics. Feel free to reach out to me if you need help selecting your topic or niche for your personal brand. I can guide you through a process that can help you select one for your social media journey.

Following the above five steps can help you build a niche for your personal brand. Also, this will help you become known for that ONE topic that really matters in your personal branding journey.
